Pizza has been around for longer than you might think. Ancient Egyptians and Greeks used to eat fat bread topped with olive oil and other things. Early Italians baked bread on hot stones. Then they topped the bread with spices and other ingredients. The pizza we know began in 1889. It was made by Raffaele Esposito in Naples, Italy, in honour of visiting the king and queen. Many Italians came to the United States during the 1800s. They brought pizza with them in the late 19^th century. But most people in the United States did not know about pizza.


It became popular after World War II. American soldiers ate pizza in Italy. They liked it and wanted more. When they came home from the war, they wanted pizza at home. Soon pizza became popular all over the country.
