Methodology
The subject of analysis was one of the aspects of quantity category as singularity
vs plurality of nouns, pronouns and verbs. For analysis the following methods were
used: comparison and contrast, generalization or universalization, differentiation and
specification. The material of analysis was reference guides, and research papers.
It is known that the category of plurality in the English is usually expressed by
morphological and lexical ways. According to Murphy’s reference book (1986: 156),
English plurality of nouns is usually expressed with inflexion – s(es): desk – desks;
lady – ladies. At the same time a lot of English nouns’ plural form is given with zero
inflexion (deer, sheep) or changing the morphemes (foot-feet; man- men), or with the
adding suffixes (child-children). The grammarians (See Murphy, Maclin), also single
out the following type of plural form in irregular nouns: loaf-loaves; shelf – shelves.
The Uzbek language is synthetic and agglutinative language (type of
morphological structure, where words are built with the help of suffixes). In the Uzbek
language forms of nouns’ plurality are also expressed with the suffix’’-lar’’ (kitob-
kitoblar). At the same time, this suffix of plurality with the verbs conveys the meaning
of respect to elder people - bobomlar keldilar, or it can be used as means of politeness
(Mamadjanova, 2009).
In other side this suffix can be used in the following cases in Uzbek:
- to streghen the meaning of the words: Sizlarga qarab zavqlarim oshib ketdi.
Shovqindan boshlarim og’rib ketdi.
