The role of games in learning English

Silly stories

Language

Making up stories, using the past tense.

Skills

Listening and speaking.

Control

Free.

Level

Intermediate/advanced.

Time

5—10 minutes.

Materials

None.

Preparation: None, unless you would like to think of some beginnings for stories
Procedure: Class work.
Begin the story with the first half of a sentence. Then ask the class to think of a continuation, e.g.
Teacher: I saw a horse sitting . . .
Learner 1: . . . , in the kitchen.
Teacher: It was eating. . .
Learner 2: . . . a piece of cake.
Learner 3: And drinking a cup of tea.
Teacher: I said . . .
Learner 4: Don't you have milk in your tea?'

TRUE/FALSE GAMES
This is one of the great families of games. And, as in all flourishing families, there are not only many members in existence but many still to be born! Essentially, someone makes a statement which is either true or false. The game is to decide which it is. Even in this small selection of True/false games, it can be seen that all levels of proficiency can benefit from this sort of challenge.
Repeat it if it's true
Language: Repeating sentences after the teacher.
Skills: Listening and speaking.
Control: Controlled.
Level: Beginners.
Time: 5—10 minutes.
Materials: Large pictures.
Preparation: Collect about 10-15 pictures which you can hold up and which may be seen the length of the classroom. Each picture should emphasize a single concept, e.g. running, swimming, climbing has got . . . hasn't got . . . some, any in, on, under, next to
Procedure: Class work.
Hold up one of the pictures and make a true or false statement about it. The class should listen and repeat what you have said, if it is true.
You can have a competition with the class. Give yourself a point every time you can get the class to repeat something which is untrue, and give the class a point when they respond correctly (by repeating something true or ignoring something false). Teacher: He's running. Class: He's running. Teacher: That's one point for you.
Teacher: She's swimming.
Class:
Teacher: That's another point for you.
