CHAPTER II. THE INFLUENCE OF ROMANTICISM IN LITERATURE
2.1. The influence of Romanticism in literature and its development
Romanticism had a great influence on literature. Literary romanticism changed the idea of literature. The latter, before the 18th century, simply consisted of essays, history, and the study of ancient Greek and Roman languages. It was limited to studying the classics, and it wasn't something imaginative and inventive; rather, it was very limited and dominated by rationality. Poetry was considered primarily as an imitation of nature. Then romanticism appeared as a new beginning with a new concept of literature, introducing new ideas and ways of perceiving things. By this time, literature had become almost synonymous with" imaginative, "" inventive and "creative." The literary work itself came to be perceived as an organic unity: it became, in William Wordsworth's definition, "a spontaneous overflow of powerful feeling." Poetry then acquired a deep social, political, and philosophical meaning. Literature became a whole alternative ideology governed by the "imagination" and it influenced also in a movement of poetry in English literature in romanticism.
Romanticism revolutionized philosophy, religion, and literature as a way of thinking. It challenged the established way of thinking that had been widely adopted during the Enlightenment era: the time when ideas were more important than reason. The French philosopher Jean Jack Rousseau, for instance, describes the romantic ideological novelty as follows: Before I thought, I felt. In this articulation, he goes against Descartes who rather upholds reason : ' I think hence I'm '. Additionally, Rousseau stated that man ought to liberate his spirit. This should bring a groundbreaking thought, which is sentiments might prompt 'truth'. As a result, the romantic philosophy of the 18th century rejected the idea that the mind functions as a simple receiver of the outside world or as a mirror. it rather considers the psyche as itself the maker of the universe it sees.
Romanticism significantly affected writing. Artistic Sentimentalism has changed the thought of writing. The last option, before the 18C., basically comprised of articles, history, and the investigation of antiquated Greek and Roman dialects. It was limited to the investigation of Works of art, and it was not something creative/innovative ; rather, it was severely constrained and dominated by logic. Poetry was primarily viewed as a recreation of nature. Then, at that point, Sentimentalism came as fresh start with new origination for writing, by presenting novel thoughts and approaches to seeing things. By this point, the terms "imaginative," "inventive," and "creative" were practically synonymous with literature. The scholarly work itself came to be viewed as a natural solidarity : it became, as William Wordsworth characterized it : ' the uncontrollable outpouring of a powerful emotion. Poetry developed profound social, political, and philosophical ramifications at that time. Literature has developed into a comprehensive alternative ideology based on "imagination."
Romanticism was essentially a movement of thought which had its philosophical roots in Europe and its artistic expression in England. The ways the English Romantic poets, writers expressed these ideas were quite interesting. So, let’s see some example writers that influenced on English romanticism:
