What is The World Around Us?

It is the name given to the area of the primary curriculum that helps pupils to understand their environment, how it has changed over time and how we interact with our world.

The World Around Us is an Area of Learning in the primary curriculum. In the Foundation Stage, it plays a key role in encouraging children's natural curiosity through play-based learning and planned activities across Geography, History, and Science and Technology.

The way we perceive ourselves in relation to the rest of the world influences our behaviors and our beliefs. The dynamics of psychology — cognition, perception, learning, emotion, attitudes and relationships — all play a significant role in how humans see themselves and the many elements in their environment.

Vision, smell, taste, hearing, and touch; are the five senses that help us understand the environment surrounding us. These are not only the most fundamental inputs from the environment but also the most important for surviving in one.

These strands give teachers considerable flexibility in choosing content that develops children’s knowledge and understanding. Teachers should connect children’s learning across the strands and embed the key elements that underpin the curriculum objectives. This brings meaning and relevance to their experiences in school and in the world around them.
