Lesson aims Students learn food and drink vocabulary.
New language chicken, water, orange, cheese, milk, egg, apple, banana, juice, bread
Objectives :

  • To enlarge the range of pupils’ vocabulary on food and drinks

  • To develop pupils listening and speaking ability.

Organisational moment:
Lead – in: 5 minutes

  • Greeting

  • Reporting on duty

Ask students:

  1. What is the weather like today?

  2. Do you like a rainy day?

The procedure of the lesson.
Warmer-up activity: • Teacher draws a dot-to-dot picture of an apple on the board. Uses ten dots only in your drawing and number them 1 through 10. Asks individual students to the board to draw lines from each number in order. When the picture is completed, teacher asks What’s this? Elicit or teach It’s an apple. Ask students What other food words do you know? Elicit any food vocabulary students may know already
Presentation: Teacher Holds up different food flashcards and say the new word. Students repeat in chorus and individually. Hold up each flashcard and ask Is it (an apple)? Students reply Yes, it is. / No, it isn’t.
Listening task: Who is speaking?
• Say Open your books to page 70, please. Ask Who can you see? (David, Olivia, Tina.) Explain that the children are having a picnic. Ask What food can you see? Students name the food and drink items they can see. • Say Listen. Who’s speaking? Play the recording. Students listen and point to the character they think is speaking (Olivia, David, Tina, Leo). Then play the recording again, pausing for students to point to each food and drink item.

Olivia: What a great picnic! What do you have, David?
David: I have two eggs and two apples. And I have a big yellow banana! And some milk. Yum!
Tina: What about you, Olivia? What do you have?
Olivia: Chicken and an orange.
David: What’s that in your picnic basket?
Olivia: Water. What do you have, Tina?
Tina: I have bread and cheese.
David: And to drink? Tina: I have juice … Oh, no! Juice with bread!
Leo: Crick!

Listen, point, and say.
Teacher Plays the recording. Students listen and point to the food and drink. Play again, pausing for students to repeat the words. Play the recording a third time. Students listen and say the words while tracing over the word labels with their fingers.
Grammar theme: Teacher explains how to use the verb “like”
I like grape Sabina likes apple
Game time: teacher shows two plastic dishes with sticked faces. One of them is Lucy and another one is Johny. Pupils one by one come to the desk full of food and feed Lucy and Johny.
Johny likes apple. Lucy likes orange
Johny likes banana Lucy likes cheese
Ending the lesson
• Students play a food version of Bingo. They draw the outline of a picnic basket with four food and drink items in it. Call out the items in sentences, using I have and I don’t have, e.g., I don’t have chicken. I have cheese.
Home assignment: to learn the new words and draw the pictures of their favorite food.
