Changes in Multi-National Enterprises (MNE)

MNE is any business that has productive activities in two or more countries. Two notable changes in the MNE composition in the past 50 years are (1) the rise of non-US multinationals, i.e. MNE from Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea & China; and (2) the growth of medium & small multinationals.

Changes in World Order

The Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia have been disintegrated. Most communistic countries are now shifting towards democratic politics and free market economics. The Eastern European countries, i.e. Russia, which before were closed to Western international businesses, now present many investment and import opportunities. Several revolutions have occurred in China and, as a result, reforms towards market economy were implemented.

For decades most Latin American countries were ruled by dictators and suffer from low growth, high debts and hyperinflation. There have been changes in the last 20 years that have resulted in lower inflation, privatization and encouragement for FDI but there is greater risk due to political uncertainty.
