VI. International Relations of the United Kingdom
The international relations of the United Kingdom are shaped by its history as a colonial power, its
membership in various international organizations, and its close relationship with the United States. As
a founding member of the United Nations and a member of the European Union, the UK has played an
active role in international affairs. In recent years, however, the UK has experienced significant changes
in its relationship with Europe due to its decision to leave the EU. This process, commonly known as
Brexit, has created new challenges for the UK, including renegotiating trade agreements and establishing
new relationships with other countries. In addition, the UK's close relationship with the US has come
under strain in recent years, as the two countries have disagreed on issues such as trade policy and climate
change. Nonetheless, the UK remains an important player in global affairs, with strong relationships with
countries such as Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
A. The United Kingdom and the European Union
The United Kingdom's relationship with the European Union (EU) has been a contentious topic for
decades, with some advocating for membership while others push for departure. In 1973, the UK joined
the European Economic Community, which later evolved into the EU. Over time, the UK's role in the EU

has become contentious, with increased regulation and the financial burdens placed on the UK. In 2016,
the UK held a referendum where voters chose to leave the EU; thus, the Brexit process initiated. Since
then, the UK has been engaged in intense negotiations with the EU, where the biggest sticking points have
been the Irish Border and trade relations. The future of the UK's relationship with the EU is uncertain
but it will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the UK's economy and international standing.
