Reference to the audience

I can see many of you are...

I know you’ve all travelled a long way.

Thank you for coming today.

Signalling the end

OK. That brings me to the end of my presentation.

That covers everything I wanted to cover.

Making Effective Presentations

ORGANIZATION:

  • Introduction:

  • To gain attention, start with an interesting quotation or rhetorical question.

  • Body:

  • Present the main points or results in each section.

  • Define any special terms you use but do not go into the details.

  • If you need your audience to have the structure and details after the talk, prepare a handout.

  • Modulate your voice throughout the presentation. Speak loudly, clearly and not too fast.

  • Sound interested in what you are saying.

  • To get more attention, use the structure "What ……. is ….”

(Instead of “We need more reliable sources” use “What we need is more reliable sources.”)

  • Conclusion:

  • For your speech to be successful, have an impressive closing.

  • Give the audience the opportunity to discuss the points you have raised by asking if anyone has questions.

  • If somebody asks a question, thank the person and answer the question.

BODY LANGUAGE:

  • Have eye-contact with the audience. Have a friendly face.

  • Have an appropriate body language and gestures while giving a presentation.

  • If you are nervous, breathe deeply!

  • If needed, hold a pencil – it gives you something to do with your hands and distress you!

VISUAL AIDS:

  • Use as many diagrams and pictures as possible – they convey more information in a short time.

  • Use no more than 2-3 colours in your visuals. Use colours logically to link similar ideas together.

  • Avoid yellow and orange, which cannot be seen.

  • Don’t have more than a few lines in Power Point Presentation/Overhead projector.

  • Give your conclusions on the same transparency/slide if possible.

  • Finish your power point presentation with a list of references or a bibliography.
