In contrast, content-based instruction involves immersing learners in learning materials; text that they would commonly read for enjoyment, information or entertainment

Discussion:

Various studies have shown that a content-based approach can help learners acquire language skills more effectively. Specifically, learners improve their reading skills through content-based instruction faster than when using other traditional approaches. This is because content-based instruction allows for a more meaningful context for learners to comprehend what they are reading. When learners have prior knowledge of the subject area of the text, they are better able to guess at unfamiliar vocabulary from context.

Moreover, with content-based instruction, teachers do not have to teach vocabulary separately; instead, the learners pick up new words and expressions by reading, thereby enriching their vocabulary.
