Using content-based approach in teaching reading

Introduction:

Reading is a fundamental skill that needs to be developed from an early age as it is important in everyday life. However, teaching reading to learners often proves to be a complex and lengthy process. Content-based approaches have been adopted in teaching language skills, including reading. This report aims to assess the effectiveness of using a Content-based approach in teaching reading.

Background:

The traditional method of teaching reading has been based on the assumption that learners need to learn separate reading skills through disconnected tasks like filling in gaps, scanning, skimming, and comprehension quizzes. In contrast, content-based instruction involves immersing learners in learning materials; text that they would commonly read for enjoyment, information or entertainment

Discussion:

Various studies have shown that a content-based approach can help learners acquire language skills more effectively. Specifically, learners improve their reading skills through content-based instruction faster than when using other traditional approaches. This is because content-based instruction allows for a more meaningful context for learners to comprehend what they are reading. When learners have prior knowledge of the subject area of the text, they are better able to guess at unfamiliar vocabulary from context.

Moreover, with content-based instruction, teachers do not have to teach vocabulary separately; instead, the learners pick up new words and expressions by reading, thereby enriching their vocabulary. The learners also get to strengthen their appreciation of the reading materials' relevance to real-world situations, which enhances their ability to identify, analyze, and interpret arguments embedded in texts.

Adopting a content-based approach requires significant preparation on the part of the teacher. The teacher has to select appropriate materials and engage the learners actively to maintain their interest and engagement. However, the benefits of learning gained by the learners often make the extra effort required of the teacher worth it.

Conclusion:

As discussed in this report, the use of the content-based approach has proven effective in teaching reading among learners. With content-based instruction, learners gain a deeper knowledge of the material they are reading and can interpret language, vocabulary, and grammar more effectively. Content-based instruction is also beneficial in helping learners increase their language proficiency through engaging with authentic materials. As such, it is recommended that teachers incorporate content-based approaches in teaching reading skills for better learning outcomes.

Thanks for attention
