Exceptions to the rule
In iambic pentameter, the sonnets are almost entirely composed of three quatrains and a couplet. There are a few exceptions to this rule. There are fifteen lines in Sonnet 99. Six couplets and two blank lines are marked with italic brackets in Sonnet 126. Iambic tetrameters are used in Sonnet 145.Various sorts of love. The sonnet form is thought to be a romantic poetry in which the author expresses his affections for his sweetheart. The first sonnets were written for stylized, idealized, and flawlessly attractive women. Shakespeare, on the other hand, wrote most of his sonnets to an anonymous young man, which was unusual in Elizabethan England. Within the sonnets, the author examined several sorts of love, including the love between the speaker and the young man, the Youngman and the dark lady, and the dark lady and the speaker. Shakespeare used multiple sonnets to contrast idealistic love found in poetry with the difficult love experienced in real life.
Clichéd vs. genuine beauty
Women were characterized as the loveliest creatures on Earth in traditional sonnets, employing hyperbolic adjectives like faultless look, grace, and so on. Shakespeare, on the other hand, developed a real figure with flaws rather than an idealized, false one. The sonnet emphasizes that true love exists when one embraces one's beloved for who she is as well as what she is not.
Beauty is represented as a significant duty in the sonnets. The speaker encourages the young man to procreate and have children in order to immortalize his beauty. But, "his bad behaviour will eventually distort his beauty, much like a rotten spot eventually spreads". Shakespeare claimed that the young man deserved such a face bestowed by nature.
Life is far too short to waste it foolishly. Time moves forward without pause. Everything should be appreciated while it is still available; else, it will be too late. In the opening of the sonnets, the poet offers his thoughts to the young man. He is young and attractive. He might lose them one day.
