Tell about V.V. Vinogradov’s classification of PhUs
V.V. Vinogradov's classification is based on the degree of semantic cohesion between the components of a phraseological unit, and includes three classes: phraseological combinations, unities and fusions: 1) Phraseological combinations are word-groups with a partially changed meaning, clearly motivated, as the meaning of PhU can be easily deduced from meanings of its constituents. E.g. bosomfriends, toshakehands,
2) Phraseological unities are word-groups with a completely changed meaning of constituents, and the meaning of the whole is made by metaphorical or metonymical shift of meanings of the constituents. E.g. to stick to one's guns (to be true to one's views or convictions);
3) Phraseological fusions are word-groups with a completely changed meaning but, in contrast to the unities, they are demotivated as metaphor or metonymy on which the shift of meaning was based, lost their clarity and are obscure. Eg a dog in the manger (one who prevents others from having or using things even though he or she does not need them).
