The Statue of Liberty

  • The Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor welcomes newcomers to the United States. The 152 foot figure of woman, was sculpted by Auguste Bartholdi in honour of the centennial of the US independence. It is originally called “Liberty Enlightening the World”. The statue was presented to the United States by France on July 4, 1876 to commemorate the alliance of two nations during the American Revolution.

The Statue of Liberty

  • She holds a torch in her right hand and carries a book of law in her left hand. The book is inscribed July 4, 1876. Broken chains symbolizing the overthrow of tyranny, lie at her feet. The Statue of Liberty National Monument is reached by ferry from New York city. The statue is visited by over 5 million people a year. There are two museums located in the base of the Statue.
  • The Statue of Liberty was originally created as a gesture of international friendship, but she has become the global symbol of freedom

THE WHITE HOUSE

  • Originally the White House was grey and was called the Presidential Palace. It was built from 1792 to 1800. After the war the building was painted white. In 1901 President Theodore Roosevelt issued an order changing the official name to the “White House”.
  • The White House is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the United States.
  • Each year more than 1,5 million visitors come to Washington to tour the President’s residence; however they can see only a few of mansion’s 132 rooms, as only five of them are open to the public.

STATE FLAG

  • The American flag is called “The Stars and Stripes”. The are fifty stars on the American flag: one star for each state. The flag has 7 red stripes and 6 white stripes. The stripes mean the first 13 colonies of the USA.

  • The eagle became the official national symbol of the USA in 1782. It has an olive branch a symbol of peace and arrows symbols of strength.

THE FIRST PRESIDENT

  • The first US president known to all Americans as “The Father of the Nation” was George Washington. George Washington was born in Virginia in a plantation owner’s family. When he was eleven his father died. George went to a private school and later two private teachers taught him to be a soldier and a Virginia gentleman.
  • George Washington began his career in the service of his country as a major in the Virginia militia and later became Commander in Chief of the Colonial Army during the Revolutionary War. He was among those who wrote the US Constitution in Philadelphia. People respected him for his courage, honesty and wisdom.
  • In 1789 George Washington became the first President of the country and served two terms. He was the only American President who never lived in the White House. He refused a third term and retired in 1797 and he dead two years later.
