Organization vs Improvisation
Of course, not everything on our trip was fully organized and booked in advance. Many things that we couldn’t predict had to be taken in consideration. We haven’t for example booked many activities ahead of time in order to accommodate our plans based on the weather or our mood. For the majority of the places we traveled to, we were there during the shoulder season so booking last minute activities were not an issue.
While I did most of the organization ahead of the travels, Christophe was in charge of the daily activities or things to do. First, he read through multiple blogs, books, etc and taking a first pass at bookmarking interesting places. Then, when in transit between places, he would dive deeper into a city or region, and find cool places on Instagram or Google Maps + leverage some our friends’ recommendations.
Some unexpected events also made us improvise a littlWe had for example booked a 3 days tour around Uyuni in Bolivia that got cancelled because of some roads being blocked by protests (which we found out the day before flying into the location).
So we had to improvise and we ended up staying longer at the salt flats of Uyuni, enjoying its incredible sights.
We also had booked a cruise in Milford Sound, New Zealand, that got cancelled because of the amount of snow that fell the night before our departure. While we were very excited about this part of the trip, we ended up spending 2 more days in Queenstown, being able to explore more the city and do some of most popular activities in the city (like Bungee jumping).
While traveling, we decided to extend our trip. While we knew that we had to be in France for a wedding in July, we also knew that it could be a good idea to come back to France (again) to celebrate my father’s 60 birthday in September. So we had 2 spare months in between July and September and we hadn’t planned anything for it yet. We considered going to Rwanda (which, in the end, turned out to be too expensive at that time of year/last minute) or even Kenya (since we loved it so much the first time).
In the end, decided to take it a bit slower and decided on a 5–6 weeks Italy/Croatia combo to enjoy the Mediterranean sun
After months of staying in a country for about 15 days on average, running from a city to the next (our longest stay in one place was Tokyo for 7 days), we figured we would try a different rhythm for this part of the trip.
