9. The educational mening of Oscar wilde’s “HAPPY PRINCE’’

  • Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1854 to a writer mother and a writer and physician father. He was an excellent student, receiving scholarships and graduating with honors. Wilde married and had two children; however, he had a homosexual love affair for which he was put on trial, convicted of indecency, and imprisoned in Britain for two years. He then spent the last three years of his life in exile in Paris, France, before dying in 1900.
  • ''The Happy Prince'' opens with a description of a beautiful statue of the Prince, one made of gold and adorned with jewels. All the people in the town admire the statue of the Prince. One night, a lone bird, Swallow, seeks shelter at the feet of the Prince. Swallow notices the Prince is crying, and the Prince says it is because he is sad at the suffering of the poor. The Prince asks Swallow to deliver his ruby to a poor mother and child. Although Swallow needs to fly south for the winter, he agrees to help deliver the ruby.
  • The next night, the Prince asks Swallow to deliver one of his sapphire eyes to a poor writer. Swallow does not want the Prince to lose an eye, but the Prince insists, so Swallow agrees. On the following night, the Prince insists that Swallow take his other sapphire eye and deliver it to a poor girl. After this, the Prince requests that his gold plating be given to the poor as well. As Swallow feels sorry for the Prince, he cancels his plan to fly south to stay with him and deliver all of his gold to the people in need. The Prince becomes blind, and the people begin to call the statue ugly when his riches are gone. Only Swallow knows that the Prince's heart is pure and decides to stay with him forever. However, it has become winter, and Swallow soon dies from the cold. Shortly after, the Prince dies of a broken heart.
  • Although a comparatively short story, ''The Happy Prince'' has many themes: judging others, poverty versus wealth, greed, religion, sacrifice, love, and compassion. The following will elaborate on these universal themes with specific examples from the story.
