participants were assumed to fix the memory of the jagged shape in their minds
by mentally attaching it to a star shape. When asked to recall the image, they
could remember that the true star shape was not quite right, but they did not have
a distinct memory of the jagged shape. The theory is that when we come across
something that does not seem to have a frame of reference in our experience to
date, we attach it to something similar, and so in recall the memory of the
information or experience becomes skewed.
hosting a memory forum
EXERCISE THREE
Try this exercise with a group of friends or family. The aim is to gain a complete
recollection of an event by pooling everyone’s memories. Make sure the forum
is fun, not formal – laughter will help everyone’s recall.
1. Gather together a group of people who have all been present at the same
event. Perhaps you might choose a picnic with relatives (including children for
an extra dimension); or a dinner party with some close friends. You might like to
include memory triggers in your gathering – for example, the same food or
background music as at the original event.
2. Tell your guests which occasion they will be called upon to remember only
when they arrive for the forum. Spend ten to fifteen minutes together quietly
trying to recall the event in as much detail as possible, each individual making
notes on paper. What were people wearing? What were the topics of
conversation? Did anything unexpected happen?
3. Take it in turns to offer one memory of the event at a time. Are your memories
similar or widely different? If someone recalls something you do not, does this
trigger a forgotten memory for you? Continue going round until the pool of
memories is exhausted.
