Cloze Exam

For this activity it’s a good idea to choose one of the reading texts you used with your students at your previous lessons and delete every fifth or sixth word in it so that your students fill in the blanks with the missing words. The words your students use don’t have to be the original ones, however they should be grammatically correct and logically appropriate to the given context. Thus, you have the chance to assess your learners’ comprehension and progress and give them credit.

Listening Cloze

Movies can serve as a great resource for learning as they are authentic and sound more real world rather than movies which can accompany your course book. Choose any episode from a movie or short film which may last up to 5 minutes. There are two ways to use this scene. One of them is to replace specific vocabulary with blank spaces and ask students to fill in while they listen. The other one is to leave space for each fifth word and have your students fill in the missing words. Through strategy you can check your students’ general listening comprehension skills.

Silent conversation

This activity works best if the film is not so boring and more of the interest area to your students. You may show one of the conversations in the movie while the volume is down and ask students take notes about what is happening. Then students in small groups or pairs discuss and share their notes with each other so that they can practise and improvise the events in the film. After students performed their conversations show this part of the film so that they can compare their conversation with that in the film.

Headline Matchup

One of the interesting activities you can do is matching headlines with the newspaper or magazine articles and online articles. First, cut the headlines from the newspaper articles and then mix them. Students’ task is in small groups to match the headlines with the suitable articles. Students read the headlines a

Gather ten newspaper article or online articles for this reading activity and separate each headline from the news article that goes with it. Mix up the headlines and articles and post them in random order on an empty bulletin board or poster board in your room. Number each headline from one to ten and each news article from a to j. Then have students read the headlines and the articles and determine which ones go together. Follow the activity by having students not the similarities between the headlines and then writing some alternate ones for the articles they read.

Taboo

Taboo is a classic game played in teams of at least two where one person sees a word on a card and tries to make their teammate guess the word by saying anything but that word (and sometimes other “taboo” words on the card.) There is a set amount of time to get as many correct guesses as possible. You can create your own version of this game related to history, social studies or current events. This is a very interactive game that can promote focus, energy and really “liven up” any topic.
