1. What is DBMS? Explain advantages of DBMS over FPS.
A Database Management System (DBMS) is software that allows users to manage and organize large amounts of data efficiently. It provides an interface for users to create, manipulate, and retrieve data from databases.
DBMS serves as an intermediary between the users and the databases, handling tasks such as data storage, retrieval, and security. It helps ensure data integrity, consistency, and reliability by implementing mechanisms like transaction management and data validation.
Advantages of DBMS over FPS :-
Data Integration and Centralization: DBMS allows for the centralization of data by storing it in a single, shared database. This eliminates data redundancy and duplication that often occurs in FPS, where multiple copies of the same data might be stored in different files. Centralized data storage facilitates efficient data integration, retrieval, and analysis.
Data Consistency and Integrity: DBMS enforces data consistency and integrity by providing mechanisms such as referential integrity constraints, unique key constraints, and data validation rules. These features ensure that data entered into the database meets predefined criteria and remains consistent over time. In FPS, maintaining data consistency across multiple files can be challenging and prone to errors.
Data Security and Access Control: DBMS incorporates robust security features to protect sensitive data. It allows for user authentication and authorization, ensuring that only authorized users can access and modify the data. Additionally, DBMS provides mechanisms for encrypting data, auditing user activities, and implementing fine-grained access controls. In FPS, securing data can be more complex and less centralized.
Data Independence: DBMS provides a layer of abstraction between the physical storage of data and the logical representation of data. This allows for data independence, meaning that changes to the database structure (e.g., adding or modifying tables) do not require changes to the applications that use the data. In FPS, modifying the structure or format of files often requires significant changes to the applications that rely on those files.
