Location Kananga (sub-village) is one of the potential site for a Micro Hydropower (MHP) implementation. Kananga sub-village is part of Papandangan village, Anreapi district, Polmas regency, Sulawesi Selatan province. It is located geographically at S 03 20'29” and E 119 20'46”. Papandangan village north border is Pasapa village, Balla village at the southern side, Paladen village at the western side and Anreapi village at the eastern side. 0 0 (buses) which services route among Polewali - Anreapi - Papandangan. From Papanda- ngan, the MHP scheme location (power house) could be reached by walk in 5 mi- nutes (for more detail, see Table 1.) The MHP scheme will uses water from Papandangan river. The river located on the southeast of Batu sub-village (part of Papan- dangan village). From the MHP scheme $
Kananga located about 18.1 km to the north of Polewali city, Polmas regency, Sulawesi Selatan Province. The location could be reach by four wheel vehicle such Kijang or motorcycle in about 1 hour from Polewali,or by a public transportation location (power house) the river goes to the south direction. Topographic conditions along the river are moderate slope, while the materials around the river are loose soil and gravelly. Detail topographic map could be seen in Annex 3. 1. SITE DESCRIPTION S I T E R E P O R T Inventory Study on Development Potential For Rural electrification i n I N D O N E S I A 1 Village settlement around the MHP scheme (Batu sub-villages) are quite concentrated. There is no adequate distance between every small group from one to another. Almost the villagers are far- mers. Their main crops are coffee, and chocola- te. They still cultivate their land in traditional way, without any modern agriculture know-how. According to the agricultural potential in the area, Batu are quite prospective to develop further. There are existing public facilities such as elementary school, mosque, and village government office. There are also community organizations such as Farmer groups, and religious groups. 3. SOCIO - ECONOMIC CONDITION 4. POTENTIAL ENERGY SOURCES AND ELECTRIFICATION CONDITION The villages around the MHP scheme has not been electrified and will not get electricity from PLN grid, at least in the recent PLN Plan. The nearest PLN electricity grid is about 6 km. Existing main energy sources for villagers there are kerosene, oil, and several diesel-fueled generators for lighting and other needs. The village around MHP scheme location economically have many potential, especially in agriculture, horticulture, fishery and forestry sectors. However, related production facilities are still insufficient, there are some possibilities such as: storage facility, and coffee grinding. MHP development is expected giving valuable support to increase community economics quality apart from lighting need. As shown at Table 2, the number of households which will electrified by MHP scheme at Batu sub- village and the surrounding area are 150 households. Based on empiric data of electrification project using MHP, the estimate electricity need or electrical power need assumption is about 100 watt per house. Including the electricity need for several public facilities, then total MHP Capacity expected for Batu sub-villages and the surrounding area is about 15.79 kW. $

Total 15.79 kW Table 3. Estimate Energy Demand in The Catchment Area 5. HYDRO-POWER POTENTIAL According to topographic measurement, water from Papandangan River will be flowed through intake then to headrace which the length is about 210 m (see detailed site plan at Annex 4). For this MHP scheme, measured gross head is about 8.5 m and estimated penstock length is about 14.5 m. Detail penstock profile is shown at Annex 5. Estimated minimum power electricity need in Batu sub-village and the surrounding area is about 15.79 kW. To fulfil this requirement, the MHP discharge have to be about 400 l/s with the estimate net head 8 m, with this calcula- tion the MHP scheme could generate electri - city power about 16.03 kW and still have reserved power about 0.51 kW (see detail calculation at Table 4.). Recorded discharge data or annual discharge are not available and discharge measurement done not in the driest month, therefore maximum discharge in the dry season estimated about 400 l/s. However, design discharge has to be determined in detail and more accurate, considering all factor, and catchment area when a further feasibility study for this MHP done. Figure 2 A part of Papandangan river where a dam (weir) of MHP scheme will exists.
Inventory Study on Development Potential For Rural electrification i n I N D O N E S I A 3 The village settlement surrounding the MHP scheme are quite concentrated and in small groups which have significant distance from each other. Main transmission line to those sub-villages, as shown in Table 2, is about 3.63 km length. The transmission line design of Batu sub-village and the surrounding area is shown in Annex 6.
