Family values, sometimes referred to as familial values, are traditional or cultural values that pertain to the family’s structure, function, roles, beliefs, attitudes, and ideals.

In the social sciences and U.S. political discourse, the term “traditional family” refers to a nuclear family—a child-rearing environment composed of a breadwinning parent, a homemaking parent, and their normally biological children; sociologists formerly referred to this model as the norm.

A family deviating from this model is considered a nontraditional family. However, in most cultures at most times, the extended family model has been most common, not the nuclear family, and the nuclear family became the most common form in the U.S. in the 1960s and 1970s.

Several well-known online dictionaries define “family values” as the following:

  • “the moral and ethical principles traditionally upheld and passed on within a family, as fidelty, honesty, truth, and faith.”
  • “values especially of a traditional or conservative kind which are held to promote the sound functioning of the family and to strengthen the fabric of society.”
  • “values held to be traditionally taught or reinforced within a family, such as those of high moral standards and discipline.”

Family values in islamic views

Interpretations of Islamic learnings and Arab culture are common for the majority of Saudis. Islam is a driving cultural force that dictates a submission to the will of God.[9] The academic literature suggests that the family is regarded as the main foundation of Muslim society and culture; the family structure and nature of the relationship between family members are influenced by the Islamic religion.[10] Marriage in Saudi culture means the union of two families, not just two individuals.[11] In Muslim society, marriage involves a social contract that occurs with the consent of parents or guardians. Furthermore, marriage is considered the only legitimate outlet for sexual desires, and sex outside marriage (fornication) is a crime that is punished under Islamic law.[12] This view of marriage is similar to the Western Christian view of marriage, created in 12th century France, which promised salvation, sex without sin, and much more.

Break up relationships

Many people don’t think about their family values until a crisis arises that forces them to make decisions that may go against their beliefs. While they may have never identified their values, all of sudden they are faced with the realization that something doesn’t quite fit into what they believe in. This is when people realize how important family values are to the structure and operation of their family system.

A foundation supports a family. When crises arise, the family is able to withstand them because of the stability of the relational structure. Families with defined values are able to stand strong on their views despite other people’s efforts to break through with opposing beliefs. In addition, when family members feel weak from the cold outside world, they know they can come into their family for a warm comforting connection.

Giving Family Meaning

What does family mean to you? When people think about the definition of family, they usually say something about feeling connected because they share the same views of the world. While some family members may differ on views of some topics, most family members keep the largest, most influential, beliefs intact.

People usually relate to others who share the same values as them because they are more compatible with one another. However, to find compatibility you need to know what you believe in so you know what to look for when looking for a mate or friend. Families with strong values are able to identify these values in others quickly, which then produces a new generation with similar beliefs.

When you describe yourself, do you ever tell people what you believe in? Do you talk about your personality traits and what influences the decisions you make? It’s likely that you do in one way or another, and this stems from the list of values instilled in you by your family.

Families that play together have stronger relationships and share values more closely, and there are many fun family outdoor activities that family members of all ages can enjoy in all seasons. Camping is one of the most popular activities, whether it is at a campground or just in the backyard. Hikes, a campfire, and roasting marshmallows are all part of a family camping experience that everyone will remember for years.
