  1. The Renaissance period in England:


Early renaissance



  • The renaissance period in England covers the years 1520s-1620s.

  • The period of the revival is associated with the accession to the throne of the Tudor Dynasty after the battle of the Roses with the Bosworth Field.

  • In England, unlike in Italy, literature and music dominated the Renaissance.

  • In that era 1st scholars and humanists appeared and they studied, investigated the antique philosophy, literature.

  • In Oxford and Cambridge Universities the 1st descendants of the English humanists were trained.

  • Many new forms of writing were developed.

  • The most important form of era was development of Theatre.

  • The 1st English printer was William Caxton (1422-1491). Caxton produced about 80 complete volumes, including Chaucer’s “The Canterbury Tales”, and also found time to work on translations.

  • Thomas More (1478-1535) was the most outstanding writer of the 1st stage of English Renaissance. His main work “Utopia” was written in 1516 in Latin, international language of those time.
