Main categories of industry in the UK

Britain has been industralized nation for 2 centuries. It has a variety of industries which can be divided into three main categories:

  • Primary(provides raw materials from the land and sea);
  • Manufacturing(make raw materials into finished goods);
  • Service(people provide services for others).

Industrial development

The coal and iron North-east, the Midlands, Scotland and South Wales;

By waterways of Newcastle and Glasgow ship-building industries flourished;

Yorkshire dales provided sheep and wool;

Humid climate in Lancashire good for cotton- spinning process.

Britain’s industrial heritage

  • During the 19 th century Britain was transformed from a mainly agricultural society into an industrial one. This change has been called Industrial revolution because the dramatic effect it had on the British way of life. People moved to the rapidly expanding towns and cities, railways were developed to transport good around the country and by 1900 Britain had become a major World power.

Decline and Change

  • The Industrial Revolution in Britain was built on the use of machines in factories. Since 1950’s in manufacturing industries have replaced the machine operators with computers and this “automation” decline the number of employees.
  • Heavy manufacturing industry high unemployment;

  • During the last 30 years there has been a rise in smaller industries known as “light industries”. They can be located anywhere especially on the edge of town or on the industrial estates. Produced such things like washing machine or components. And they provide services.

High- tech industries

  • The first electronics firms grew up around London and gradually expanded along the motorway to the west of the capital.
  • In the 1970s Sir Clive Sinclair invented first cheap pocket calculators and established his company Sinclair Research, in Cambridge to continue his contact with the university there. 1983he had developed the world’s cheapest computer with sound and colour display and had sold over the one million computers worldwide. However Britain has been less successful in producing, marketing, selling it’s electronic goods. There is big competition with goods made in Japan, Hong Kong,

    And other Far east countries.

Today’s industry in the UK

  • The UK’s economy is dominated by services industries. These include retail, hospitality, professional services, business administration and finance.
  • In 2021, services industries contributed £1.7 trillion in Gross Value Added (GVA) to the UK economy, 80% of total UK GVA. GVA is a measure of economic output that is similar to GDP. It measures the value of products and services produced minus the costs incurred in production.
