LESSON PLAN #7 . LANGUAGE AND CULTURE IN ENGLISH CLASSROOMS: GREETINGS, WAYS OF EXPRESSING POLITENESS


Activity type: Reading, writing, listening and speaking
Language focus: Making polite requests, accepting and declining requests
Aim:

  • To practice the language for making, accepting and declining polite request

  • To raise students’ awareness about the different culture greetings and ways of expressing politeness

Materials: handouts, PPP
Time: 80 min.
Lead in . Teacher gives each student a copy of the worksheet, draw thew students’ attentionto the ten polite phrases for making request at the top of the worksheet and review the language with the class.
The students then use the ten phrases to make requests foe the situations on their worksheet.
When thew students have finished , teacher reviews their answers. Next, students fill in the vising letters in the phrases that accept and decline requests.
Afterwards , check the answers together as a class.

Students then work with a partner and take it in turns to make accept and decline request using the situations from Exersise A and phrases from Exersise B.
Procedure:
T tells to Ss that they are going to have a presentation about “DIFFERENT CULTURE GREETINGS”. Presentaition Different culture greetings
Argentina: Kiss on the right cheek
Japan: A bow
Nigeria: Snapping fingers handshake
Russia: A firm handshake
New Zealand: Hongi (touching noses)
Greenland: Kunik
