SEMINAR 14: Cognitive factors of idiomaticity in Phraseology
Topics for discussion:

  • Basic notions of Cognitive Linguistics and Phjraseology

  • The notions of concept, conceptual metaphor and conceptual blending

  • The interrelationship of idiomaticity and the language world picture

  • Role of PhU in conceptualization of the extralinguistic reality

Task 1: Answer the following questions:

  1. What do you understand as Cognitive Linguistcs? Cognitive Linguistics as a branch of Linguistics which regards the language as a cognitive mechanism of representing, storing and transmitting knowledge layers;

  2. How are the language and cognition related? Cognitive Linguistics studies the conceptual structuring in the language, the relationships between mental processes and linguistic choices, involving the human experience in cognizing the extralinguistic reality and transferring it into knowledge structures for communication.

  1. What is a concept? A concept is a culture specific and nationally oriented multifold mental unit, a quantum of information, consisting of notional, evaluative and image-bearing layers and characterized by associative, emotional and expressive links.

  1. What is the relation between the meanings of the components and the holistic meaning of an idiom?

  2. What types of knowledge structures do you know? Conceptual Integration, or Blending is understood as a cognitive operation based on the conceptual structures of two or more unrelated mental spaces (input spaces) which are linked by means of a generic space, and on the basis of their common elements are projected onto a new mental space (a blend) which generates a new emergent knowledge structure;

Blending mediated by metaphorical and metonymic correspondences represent conceptual integration network:
1. John became a bag of bones – blend is “thinness”;
2. She is playing with fire in this situation - blend is “in danger
