Wikipedia is multilingual, free, online encyclopedia. It is written and maintained by a team of volunteers based on open collaboration and a wiki-based editing system. This project was created on January 15, 2001 as a supplement to the specialist Nupedia, and is currently managed by the non – profit Wikimedia Foundation. Wikipedia has become the largest and most viewed source of information today. Currently, this free encyclopedia contains more than 20 million articles in 283 languages. Wikipedia’s largest English-language section has6569054 articles. For comparision, the number of articles in Encyclopaedia Britannica (British Encyclopedia), which is the largest among printed encyclopedias, is about 130000. In addition, following the popularity of Wikipedia, related projects such as Wikibor, Wikilughat, Wikibook, Wikiuniversity, Wikiquotes, and Wikipeople appeared.

Before Wikipedia, various collaborative online encyclopedias were attempted, but without much success. Wikipedia began as a spin – off project to Nupedia, a free English- language online encyclopedia project whose articles were authored by experts and peer-reviewed. It was established on March 9, 2000 under the ownership of the web portal company Bomis. It’s key figures were bomis CEo Jimmy Wales and Nupedia and later Wikipedia editor in chief Larry Sanger. Nupedia was originally licensed under its own Nupedia Open Content License, but even before Wikipedia was foundet, Nupedia switched to the GNU Free Documentation License at Richard Stallman’s request. Weels set the goal of creating a publicly editable encyclopedia, and Sanger credited the strategy of using a wiki to achieve that goal. On January 10 2001 Sanger proposed the creation of a wiki on the Nupedia mailing list as a “feeder” project for Nupedia.
