1.1. Charles Dickens is the great English novelist Charles John Huffam Dickens was born in 7th February,1812 in Portsmouth, on
the southern coast of England. The metropolis is positioned in Hampshire, England and is set 70 miles southwest of London. His
father, John Dickens, was a naval clerk who dreamed of striking it wealthy. Inspired by his father John Dickens, he created the
character of Mr Micawber in David Copper eld. Elizabeth Barrow, Charles' mother, wanted to work as a teacher and school
administrator. Characters like Mrs. Nickleby and Mrs. Micawber in David Copper eld and Nicholas Nickleby were inspired by his
mother, Elizabeth (Barrow) Dickens. He was the second of eight children, the renowned British author. Names of siblings Alfred
Allen Dickens, Alfred Lamert Dickens, Augustus Dickens, Frances Dickens, Frederick Dickens, Harriet Dickens, Letitia Dickens.
Despite his parents' best efforts, the household was nevertheless indigent. Nevertheless, at the beginning they were content. In
1816 the family relocated to London before settling in Chatham, Kent, where Charles and his siblings, Frances, Letitia, Harriet,
Frederick, Albert, and Augustus had unrestricted access to the countryside and Rochester's historic castle. Although he frequently
spent his later years vacationing on the Kentish coast, he is most recognized for his deep knowledge of London, the city that serves
as the scene for many of his writings. At age 12, young Charles was forced to drop out of school and start working at a boot-
blacking factory close to Covent Garden. Weekend visits to his family, who were boarders in Marshalsea Debtor's Prison in
Southwark, south of the City and across the Thames, were made by the boarder. The inspiration and material for many of his later
books, including Little Dorrit, Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, and especially David Copper eld, came from his traumatic memories
of his experiences during this period and his extraordinary memory for detail. He went back to school after three years before
starting his writing career as a journalist. Dickens spent 20 years editing a weekly journal, produced hundreds of short stories and
non- ction pieces, 15 novels, ve novellas, numerous lectures and readings, was a proli c letter writer, and actively promoted social
reforms like education reform, children's rights, and other issues. His development as a man during the reform-minded 1830s, and
in particular his work on the Liberal Benthamite Morning Chronicle(1834–1836), had a signi cant impact on his political beliefs. He
was rejected as a suitor for Maria Beadnell because his family and prospects were unimpressive; his disappointment at losing her
and aspirations of winning her intensi ed his resolve to achieve. David Copper eld's adoration of Dora Spenlow and the middle-

aged Arthur Clennam's discovery(in Little Dorrit)that Flora Finching, who had seemed enthralling years ago, was “diffuse and silly”
that Flora, "whom he had left a lily, had become a peony), are both examples of how Beadnell affected him both at the time she rst
entered his life and at her later brief and disappointing return. Dickens was active and becoming more assured of himself by the
age of 20. The actor Charles Kemble and manager George Bartley were to see him at his Covent Garden acting tryout after he was
drawn to the theater and joined the Garrick Club early on. Dickens carefully practiced and chose to mimic the comic Charles
Mathews, but ultimately he was unable to attend the audition due to a cold. He had started his writing career before another chance
came up.
