Exercise 1. Answer the following questions


  1. What are the main specific features of translating literary texts?

Literature reflects the world by means of not only logical, but mainly sensory cognition, in artistic images created and transmitted in the form of speech. Accordingly, the aesthetics of creative activity embraces the world of not only the beautiful, but also the ugly, not only the sublime, but also the base, evaluates it enthusiastically or ironically. Literature enriches the spiritual world of a person, helps to perceive the world in its infinite variety and complexity. The writer uses the wealth of language accumulated over the centuries, but he enriches it, for he lacks not only words — he is looking for new constructions of the literary text: this way was born Onegin stanza. The literary space of a major prose work.


  1. What is the role of preserving stylistic devices in translating literary texts?

One of the most interesting aspects of the theory of translation is the problem of passing stylistic devices in the target language. The given problem comes into notice of scientists-linguists, but is not developed enough. The importance of studying the way of translation of the figurative devices is conditioned by the necessity of faithful figurative information passing in any work of art.

Translation is the difficult many-sided phenomenon, the separate aspects of which can be the object of research by different sciences. Within the framework of the theory of translation the psychological, literary, ethnographic and others sides of translating activity are studied, as well as history of translating activity in this or another country.



  1. What can you say about the peculiarities of equivalence in the translating literary texts?

Translation equivalence is a principal concept in Western translation theory. It is a constitutive feature and the guiding principle of translation. As Catford points out, "the central problem of translation-practice is that of finding TL equivalents. A central task of translation theory is that of defining the nature and conditions of translation equivalence." (Catford 21: 1965) Actually, since the fifties of the twentieth century, many translation theorists have involved and elaborated translation equivalence in their respective theories. However, the concept of translation equivalence is sometimes distorted, and, perhaps, this is why some people deny its validity and necessity. To argue for the necessity of translation equivalence, we should first clarify its features. First of all, it is necessary for us to understand exactly the meaning of the word "equivalence" itself.

  1. What can you say about rendering of form and meaning in translating emotive prose?


Exercise 2. Translate the following extract from The Sketchbook by Washington Irving into the Uzbek or Russian language and analyze the variants of tran­slation.
The baron had but one child, a daughter; but nature, when she grants but one child, always compensates by mak­ing it a prodigy; and so it was with the daughter of the baron. All the nurses, gossips, and country cousins, assured her father that she had not her equal for beauty in all Germany; and who should know better than they? She had, moreover, been brought up with great care under the super­intendence of two maiden aunts, who had spent some years of their early life at one of the little German courts, and were skilled in all the branches of knowledge necessary to the education of a fine lady. Under their instructions she became a miracle of accomplishments.

By the time she was eighteen, she could embroider to admiration, and had worked whole histories of the saints in tapestry, with such strength of expression in their counte­nances, that they looked like so many souls in purgatory. She could read without great difficulty, and had spelled her way through several church legends, and almost all the chivalric wonders of the Heldenbuch. She had even made con­siderable proficiency in writing; could sign her own name without missing a letter, and so legibly, that her aunts could read it without spectacles.

She excelled in making little elegant good-for-nothing lady- like knickknacks of all kinds; was versed in the most abstruse dancing of the day, played a number of airs on the harp and guitar; and knew all the tender ballads of the Minnelieder by heart.
