The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

Pre-webinar task
WORKSHEET
Task 1

Write down all of the academic skills your students need to have to be able to succeed in their studies. This could include specific language skills, such as good reading comprehension, or other skills such as the ability to take notes. Try to list at least 10-12 skills.

e.g. good reading comprehension

Look at your list. Are there any similarities or differences in the skills? You could try categorizing the skills – what would your categories be?

Task 2

The CEFR categorises skills or strategies into four key groups:

  • Reception (i.e. taking information in)

  • Production (i.e. producing language)

  • Interaction (i.e. communicating with someone)

  • Mediation (i.e. transforming a message in some way)

We'll look at these in more detail in the webinar. For now, go back to your list from Task 1.

Using the four CEFR categories above, place each skill from your list into one of these groups:

Reception (i.e. taking information in)

e.g. good reading comprehension

Production (i.e. producing language)

Interaction (i.e. communicating with someone)

Mediation (i.e. transforming a message in some way)

e.g. reading a text then presenting the information orally

TIP: If you are finding this difficult, could the skills be put into more than one group? (Why?)

Write down any observations you have about your groups.

Task 3

  • Choose three CEFR scales from within the links provided.

  • For each scale, decide whether the skills are relevant or not relevant to your students.

  • For each relevant scale write down some ways to practise or test the skills.

Example:

Name of Scale:

Coherence and cohesion

RELEVANT NOT RELEVANT (please circle)

Ways to practise or test the skills:
