OLD HIGH GERMAN

  • IS THE EARLIEST STAGE OF THE GERMANIC LANGUAGE CONVENTIONALLY COVERUNG THE PERIOD FROM AROUN 750 TO 1050.THERE IS NO STANDARDIZED OR SUPRA-RREGIONAL FORM OF GERMAN AT THIS PERIOD AND OLD HIGH GERMAN AT THIS PERIOD AND OLD HIGH GERMAN IS AN UMBRELLA TERM FOR THE GROUP OF CONTINENTAL THE SET OF CONSONANTS CHANGES CALLED THE SECOND SOUND SHIFT.

the surviving ohg texts were all written in monastic scriptoria and as a result the overwhelming majorities of them are religious in nature or when secular belong to the Latine literary culture of Christianity .THE earliest written texts in old high german glosses and interlinear translation for latin texts appear in the letter half of the 8th century.

Around 750 to around 1050.The start of this period sees the beginning of the OHG written traditions and original compositions by the 9th century


Second Consonand Shift
In the 1stphase; PGmc voiceless plosives p,t,k when occurring between vowels, between vowel and consonant or when final after vowel shifted and correspond to German double spirants ff,zz,hh.
In the 2nd phase the same sounds p,t,k became affricates in three environments; in the word-initial position, when geminated and after sonorants and after sonorants and nasal consonants l,r,m or n.
In the 3rd phase Proto-Germanic voiced stips become voiceless ones in Germanic voiced stops become voiceless ones in Germanic voiceless ones in Germanic;PGmc b,d,g=p,t,k.
