Topic: Writing Descriptive Paragraphs

Grade Level: Middle School (6th to 8th grade)

Objectives:
- Students will understand the characteristics of a descriptive paragraph.
- Students will learn how to use sensory details to create vivid descriptions.
- Students will practice writing descriptive paragraphs.

Materials:


- Whiteboard and markers
- Handout with sample descriptive paragraphs
- Writing paper and pencils/ pens

Introduction (10 minutes):


1. Begin by asking students what they know about descriptive paragraphs and what makes a paragraph descriptive.
2. Discuss some of the characteristics of a descriptive paragraph, such as using vivid language, sensory imagery, and showing instead of telling.
3. Read aloud a descriptive paragraph, and have students identify the sensory details that make the paragraph vivid.

Direct Instruction (20 minutes):


1. Write a list of sensory details on the whiteboard and review each one (sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste).
2. Provide examples of sensory details that could be used to describe a scene or object.
3. Provide students with a handout containing sample descriptive paragraphs.
4. Together, analyze the handout and identify the sensory details that make each paragraph descriptive.
5. Have students practice circling the sensory details in their own handout.

Guided Practice (20 minutes):


1. Write a sentence on the whiteboard (e.g. "The beach is my favorite place to go on vacation.")
2. Model writing a descriptive paragraph using sensory details.
3. Have students write their own descriptive paragraph about the beach, using the sensory details they identified.

Independent Practice (20 minutes):


1. Have students select a picture or object and write a descriptive paragraph using sensory details.
2. Allow students to share their descriptive paragraphs with the class.

Closure (10 minutes):


1. Have students reflect on what they have learned about descriptive paragraphs.
2. Review the key characteristics of a descriptive paragraph.
3. Allow students to share their descriptive paragraphs with the class.

Assessment:


1. Observe students during the lesson and provide feedback on their participation and understanding of the material.
2. Evaluate students' descriptive paragraphs based on their use of sensory details.
