Introduction

Hans Christian Andersen was the first European writer to produce fairytales for both children and adults. He invented his own stories based on the fairy tale writing that preceded him. He invented his own stories based on the fairy tale form as it had been developed by the time he wrote them. The way Andersen wrote, there was a question whether he was writing for children from the beginning or if he was writing for actual children or about idealized children. [1]

His stories were written in the time when capitalism was on the rise. Western society posited an absolute dichotomy between “Society” and “Nature.” In efforts to support capitalism, the natural world, or the world of resources, had not meant until property owners did something to produce some type of income. Other groups like the indigenous people, ethnic minorities, something white working class men, and women were, more themselves in Nature than in Society. On the other hand, the elite Westerners conceived of themselves as naturally superior, morally and intellectually. Everyone who was not a capitalist gets put into the nature category.[6] At the beginning of the nineteenth century, romanticism was a broad cultural movement that valued the natural world and that the characteristics that came with it. Romanticism was the habit of idealizing Nature and its associations as a means of implicitly and explicitly criticizing Society. This is where Andersen’s writings for children come into play. Romantics represented children as perfect in themselves, innocent and authentic and by their innocence and authenticity; they were a constant critique of adult corruption. The romantic child very seldom if ever has anything to do with the actual children. It mainly has to do with how elite Western adults are
thinking about themselves.
With the romanticism style being apart of the way Andersen was writing, his stories reflect the romanticism styles. Children were made to carry authenticity, emotion, and perception.
