Comparative grammar deals with the comparative study of grammatical structure. There are some types of grammars such as transformational, descriptive, generative which are based on special methods.

Thus, Theoretical Grammar is considered to be one of the types of Grammar, according to it, first of all we have to deal with the origin (background) of grammar and with the historical development of this subject.
As it stated above, grammar has got 3 periods of development which we distinguish traditionally. And this division is taken according to the general aims of Grammar which appeared within these 3 periods.

The origin (background) of the English Grammar

In general, Robert Lowth is considered to be the first author of the English grammar, yet Alfric of Eynsham the author of the Latin grammar pointed out some details, information on the grammatical system of the English language and his book “Glossary” was the first work on the English grammar.

The next scientific grammatical work of the English language “A grammar of the English tongue” was written in 1755. Afterwards, Joseph Priestley, George Campbell and Webster’s works on the English grammar were based on the Greek and Latin Grammar.

Gradually there appeared the types of Grammar:

Scientific or Theoretical Grammar had already appeared by the end of the 19^th century. Theoretical Grammar studies not only linguists’ grammatical views and theories, but also it carries out scientific analyses of these views and theories.
A great number of linguists confirm that this type of Grammar is the most productive approach to the description of the grammatical system of the English language.
