We know that school is essentially a cultural phenomenon. There are many
cultures where there is no such thing as school, but any country isn’t one of them.
Because school is deeply embedded in our culture it isn’t going to disappear anytime
soon. If every school in the country
agreed to do away with grading, the schools
would still be full of students. In other words, grading is not the only motivation for
going to school.
Theoretically, the primary motivation for going to school is learning. This has
been true as long as schools have existed. When the idea of “school” first developed,
the concept of grades was absent. Students attended schools in order to learn what
they needed to learn. Perhaps they needed to learn writing, perhaps they needed to
learn about medicine so they could be a doctor
- whatever the subject matter,
students didn’t receive report cards until relatively recently.
It is fair to say that the primary purpose for school has always been learning.
Definitely, other functions come into play in any serious conversation about the
purpose
of schools, but education is the primary goal of every school. Grades are
only
a method of assessing learning, and are therefore secondary to the learning
itself. This means that grades are only useful if they aid in learning.
For grading we use different
ways which is called types of assessment and
