| How can I explore?
3. Notes from informal conversations with colleagues
You can also explore your own perceptions in quite a
natural way by having an informal conversation with a
colleague. Sometimes we don’t realise what we really think
about a topic because we haven’t had a chance to reflect
on it in depth. Talking to a colleague about something gives
you the opportunity to express your views in the setting
of a natural conversation.
Taking notes about some the ideas expressed during the
conversation and what you think about them gives you the
opportunity to gather interesting data about your own
perceptions.
As an example, read the following dialogue between two
teachers. Pay attention to the way in which Isabel starts
to reflect and share her views about her students’ lack
of motivation:
Isabel:
I’ve been thinking about my students’ lack

of motivation.
Mario:

What exactly is troubling you?
Isabel:
Well, they don’t seem to enjoy my classes.

They don’t get engaged in the activities. They

don’t seem to enjoy anything I do! Does that

happen to you?
Mario:

It happens to me with some classes, not all.

But yes, it does happen.
Isabel:
This really bothers me and I need to think why

it bothers me so much.
Mario:

Well, it’s not nice to prepare activities that

students don’t enjoy.
Isabel:
Exactly, that’s the main problem for me, too.

I prepare what I think is a fun class, and they

don’t show any interest.
