Dear Sir/Madam, let me evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, and report on the recency, methods, new results, and form of the MSc. thesis: Automation of processing and photometric data analysis for transiting exoplanets observed with ESO NIR instrument HAWK-I by Martin Blazek. Strengths : Thesis is devoted to the study of extrasolar planets which is a modern and quickly evolving field of research. The main aim is to develop a data reduction pipeline for the observations of planetary transits and occultations using ESO NIR instrument HAWK-I. This is a state of the art instrument mounted on the VLT, one of the world top telescopes. The pipeline consists of several computer codes written in Python. These codes will be appreciated by the astronomical community. The software was tested on real observations obtained with this instrument and telescope. The thesis is an original work of its author. The whole thesis represents an impressive amount of work for a Master degree student. Student clearly mastered photometric data reduction at a very deep level as well as data analysis & interpretation including the modelling of the data. The thesis is clear, has good logical structure, is written in English and uses proper scientific terms.
Weaknesses: I do not have any serious censure of the thesis. There are a few misprints or confusing statements mentioned below. There are also a few questions which might be addressed during the defence. These 'weaknesses' do not lower the great value of the work and results obtained by the author.
p.30
Please, can you explain more clearly why do you have the three stars on the two chips rather than on the same chip? Sec.5.2.1 The linear dependency of the dark current on the exposure time is not seen on the Fig.31. Sec.5.4 Can you describe in more detail how did you correct master flat for the dark current? Darks did not have the same exposure as flats. p.61
Why would you want "to exclude a lot of points"? It is my understanding that you have excluded as much as 98% of the data by using only the first images of the cubes. Sec.6.6
Are the errors of +0.0023-0.0021 one sigma errors? Minor points: Abstract: Please, avoid using IC or define its meaning. p.14
"Till today about 1300 exoplanets have been discovered by the transit method." I believe it is much more now. Fig.6 Are the units on y-axis (Rearth) correct? p.18 Is the reference Nymeyer et al. 2010 correct? Sec.1.3. Please, note that the first observation of an atmosphere of an exoplanet was by Charbonneau et al. 2002. They also detected first species in the atmosphere and it was sodium in the form of NaI.
p.22 "This is given by the fact that the central parts are hotter..." The above explanation for the limb darkening is quite misleading.
p.23 It is claimed that an increase in the transit depth is better detectable for low planet radius which is not the case. Sec.4.4.
Caption missing for two Figures in this section. Conclusion Please, be more cautious when using the term "clear detection" in connection with the inferred depth of 0.0036+-0.002. References: please check the reference Nymeyer et al. 2010 Final statement: The thesis is the original work of the author and proves that he is capable of independent thinking and creative scientific work. I have no doubt that the author fulfills the conditions required to receive the MSc. title upon the successful defense of the thesis. I recommend the grade A.
