Direct and Indirect Questions?

Direct questions:

Are the “normal” questions we use when we want to ask friends, family members, and people who we know well for information.

- Where is the bank?

- Is he Italian?

- Was he late for the meeting?

- Will she start her new job next week?

Indirect questions:

Indirect questions are a more polite way to ask for information or make requests. We often use them when asking something to a stranger or people we do not know well, including coworkers.
We also use them when asking for favors from friends or when we want to avoid sounding demanding or rude.

- Do you know at what time the bank opens?

- Can you tell me if he is Italian?

- Could you tell me the time?

- Can you tell me if she will start her new job next week?

When we make requests in English, we usually use the modal verbs CAN, COULD and WOULD. We also use these modals to begin some indirect questions.

Direct questions are the “normal” questions that we can ask friends, family members, and people who we know well. You can form direct questions using the QUASM model that we learned last lesson.
Example of a direct question:
“Where’s the bathroom?”
Indirect questions are a little more formal and polite. We use them when talking to a person we don’t know very well, or in professional situations, and their form is a little different.
Example of an indirect question:
