Figure 4.4 shows a similar compressor but this one is double-acting.
The double-acting compressor discharges gas on every stroke:
• As the piston moves away from the crankshaft (to the right in the figure) gas
discharges from discharge valve A.
• As the piston moves towards the crankshaft (to the left in the figure) gas
discharges from discharge valve B.
This still gives a pulsating flow but it is smoother than the
discharge from a single-
acting machine.
4.1.2 Snubbers
To reduce pulsations and to provide a more continuous flow from the discharge,
pulsation dampeners or
snubbers are fitted in the discharge and suction lines. These
are large drums that do the same job as the pulsation dampener and
suction stabiliser
used with reciprocating pumps.
Figure 4.5 shows the suction and discharge snubbers
on a large reciprocating compressor.
