Unit 3 Self and Society:
understand your learning style
Objective: to provide further practice of this soft skill 
within the area of Self and Society (using different 
learning styles to learn how to change a tyre and a first 
aid procedure).
The three-step strategy for developing this soft skill is:
Step 1 Identify your learning style. (Ex. A)
Step 2 Use it to help you learn things. (Ex. B)
Step 3 Try other styles to support your learning. 
(Ex. C)
You may decide to highlight this strategy at the 
beginning of the lesson, at the end, or as you go 
through the exercises in the section. However, if you 
prefer to teach this lesson without discussing the 
underlying soft skill, this is also possible. The lesson is 
designed to be engaging and successful either way.

Elementary Teacher’s Book.

Lead-in
To set the context for this lesson, elicit from the students 
things they need to learn to do inside and outside the 
home. If necessary give them an example to get them 
started, e.g. 
learn to use the washing machine
. Help 
with the names of things inside and outside the home as 
necessary.
Write the following on the left-hand side of the board:
How to learn to use a new gadget

Read the instructions.
b
Talk about it with a friend.
c
Practise using it.
d
Look at the pictures in the instructions.
On the right-hand side, write the following learning styles: 
a = kinaesthetic, b = visual, c = interpersonal, d = linguistic.
Check the students understand instructions (printed 
information that says how to do something) and gadget 
(elicit or give examples that students will know, e.g. 
mobile phone, MP3 player). Ask the students to copy this 
into their notebooks and then to match the techniques to 
the learning styles. Check answers as a class.
