Unit 3 Work and Career:
understanding your learning style
Objective: to provide further practice of this soft skill
within the area of Work and Career (using different
techniques to learn a work procedure and some careers
advice).
The three-step strategy for developing this soft skill is:
Step 1 Identify your main learning style. (Ex. A)
Step 2 Use it to help you learn new things. (Ex. B)
Step 3 Try other styles to help support your
learning. (Ex. C)
You may decide to highlight this strategy at the
beginning of the lesson, at the end, or as you go
through the exercises. However, if you prefer to teach
this lesson without discussing the underlying soft skill,
this is also possible. The lesson is designed to be
engaging and successful either way.
For more information about teaching life skills and ideas
for how to highlight the soft skill, please refer to p. 29 of
the Elementary Teacher’s Book.
MateriaLS:

board and markers

copies of the instructions for filing new
documents and the five-step plan for a
successful interview from Ex. B and Ex.C
(one copy per student) (optional)

coloured markers (optional)

sheets of A4- or A3-sized paper (optional)
Lead-in
To set the context for this lesson, write the following
questions and answer options on the left-hand side of
the board:

Do you prefer to study a) alone or b) with friends?

If you learn a new skill at work, do you prefer to
a) learn it alone or b) learn with people you
work with?

When you learn something new, do you prefer to
a) think a lot or b) talk a lot?
Give the students a minute to read the questions and
think about their answers. Take a class vote to see which
option is the most popular in each case.
Explain that if their answers are mostly a, they probably
prefer an intrapersonal (solitary) learning style. If
they answered mostly b, they probably prefer an
interpersonal (social) learning style. Erase the board and
write these two learning styles on the left-hand side.
If you wish, ask the students to recall the lesson from the
Elementary Student’s Book, pp. 40–41 and say what they
learnt (e.g.
that different people prefer different learning
styles, including interpersonal, visual, kinaesthetic and
linguistic; that using your preferred learning style helps
you learn better but you can also practise other styles
etc).
Elicit or give the other learning styles visual, kinaesthetic
and linguistic and add these to the list on the board.
