Erase the left-hand side of the board and write 
up the following instructions (or hand out printed 
copies to the students if you made them):
 
How to file new documents:

Make a copy of the documents.

Write the date on the copies.
3
Put the copies in the red file.
4
Sign the original documents.
5
Put the originals in the green file.

Put the green file in the filing cabinet.

Give the red file to the secretary.

Tell the students that they are now going to 
learn some new information of the type people 
commonly have to learn at work. Ask them to 
read the instructions and check that everyone 
understands them. Make sure the students 
understand filing cabinet (a place where you 
keep documents in an office).

Assign one corner of the room to each of 
the four learning styles: interpersonal, visual, 
kinaesthetic and linguistic. Ask the students to 
go and sit with the other students who have the 
same learning style.

For the students that have an interpersonal 
learning style, put them into groups of about 
four or five to do this activity. Tell the students 
they have 15 minutes to learn the procedure 
using the technique in Ex. A that corresponds to 
their preferred learning style. If you have brought 
them in, hand out the sheets of paper and 
coloured markers to the students in the visual 
group. Ask the students in the linguistic group 
to use their notebooks. Tell the students in the 
kinaesthetic group that they should mime and 
act out doing the procedure.

After 15 minutes, ask the students to work in 
pairs with a student they haven’t worked with 
yet who has a different preferred learning style 
from them.

Ask them to take turns testing each other to see 
how much of the information they can remember 
(the student being tested should sit with their 
back to the board or cover their instructions).

When the students finish, ask how many of the 
steps they were able to remember.
