Where did the meeting of the Mr. Haley and Mr. Shelby take place in chapter 1? Answer: in a dining room, in the town of P–, in Kentucky. 2. Explain the underlined word. He was a small quadroon boy. Answer: He was a small boy of one-quarter African/Aboriginal ancestry, meaning he had a biracial parent. 3. What was the name of the boy who sang negro song in front of the gentlemen and has a talent of imitating? Answer: Jim 4. Mr. Shelby did not refuse to sell Eliza. Is this statement True or False? Explain your answer. Answer: This is False, because Mr. Shelby agrees to sell Tom and Harry, not Eliza. To avoid this, Eliza escapes to the North with her son. 5. What was the reason for giving Tom to Mr.Haley? Answer: To pay off his debts. 6. How Mrs.Shelby treated her slaves? Answer: Shelby was extremely kind to her slaves, and she came to believe that slavery is a grave sin after she learned that Tom and Harry were to be sold. 7. Complete the phrase. He learned about George's invention and came to the factory to see that machine. Mr. Wilson, the owner of the factory, received him with great enthusiasm. George showed his machine to the master. He talked so fluently and looked so handsome, that his master felt jealous. Why should his slave be marching round the country, inventing machines, and holding up his head among gentlemen?
