Work of Art Stolen
On the night of September 23, 1971 the painting “The Love Letter” by Jan Vermeer, the Dutch artist, was stolen from an exhibition in Brussels. The painting belonged to the Amsterdam museum.
Ten days later the thief called the radio stations and the newspapers, demanding a ransom for the return of the picture. The ransom included: I. more than three million dollars for refugees from Bengal where thousands were dying from hunger.
a demand that the museum should finance a campaign against hunger in the world.
a threat to sell the painting if the ransom was not paid.
The ransom was not paid. But on October 6 the police found the painting. The following day they arrested a 24-year-old Belgian waiter.
His action was a form of protest on behalf of the refugees from Bengal. But did it really help them?
