Basic audio processing
2.8 Summary This chapter has covered the basics of obtaining and storing audio with Matlab, some of the most important features to be aware of when working with audio, methods of handling and visualising audio and finally of creating sounds. Subsequent chapters will build upon these techniques, incorporating them into more involved methods of analysis and processing. It would therefore be desirable to ensure familiarity with the techniques presented in this chapter before progressing into too much depth in subsequent chapters. 2.8. Summary 35 Bibliography Readers wishing to learn more about either using Matlab itself, the underlying basics of signal processing, or the theories and practicalities of audio applications, may wish to consult some of the references given by category below: M ATLAB • An Engineers Guide to M ATLAB E. B. Magrab, S. Azarm, B. Balachandran, J. Duncan, K. Herold, G. Walsh (Prentice- Hall, 3rd edition 2007) This is an expensive and extensive textbook running to 750 pages of engineering applications in Matlab. Although it does not mention audio and speech processing explicitly, it does very nicely cover techniques of data handling, visualisation and analysis. File input and output are covered, as are statistical techniques. This may well be a useful reference work, consulted in the library, rather than purchased for continuous use. • A Guide to M ATLAB : For Beginners and Experienced Users B. Hunt, R. Lipsman, J. Rosenberg, K. R. Coombes, J. E. Osborn, G. J. Stuck (Cambridge University Press, 2nd edition 2006) This far more concise reference book dispenses with the applications focus and spends more effort in covering the basic and underlying techniques of data handling, plotting and so on. It is pitched at a lower level audience, but does claim a relevance for experienced users who are upgrading to a newer Matlab version. The focus of this work is primarily the applied mathematics foundation of handling signals in Matlab. Signal Processing • Digital Signal Processing: A Practical Guide for Engineers and Scientists S. W. Smith (Newnes, 2002) Also freely available from www.dspguide.com See page 6 for further details. • Digital Signal Processing: A Practical Approach E. C. Ifeachor and B. W. Jervis (Addison-Wesley, 1993) As the title implies, this work is reasonably practical in tone, and covers most of the required areas of signal processing, including some simple coverage of speech and audio. There are very many practical examples included and stepwise methods given where appropriate. Good end-of-chapter problems are provided. This book would be useful for brushing up on DSP, but may not suit an absolute beginner. Unfortunately it is marred by a handful of scattered mistakes. |
