We hope that this work will help institutions consider ways to improve their education of physics and physical science teachers, and that research in this field can continue to grow and challenge or support the effectiveness of practices in K-12 teacher education. The mission of the PhysTEC project is to improve and promote the education of future physics and physical science teachers. The project has built a coalition that includes a large fraction of all physics degree-granting institutions, and has supported a number of these institutions with multi-year grants to build model physics teacher education programs. PhysTEC recognizes and seeks to address areas of especially high need for physics and physical science teachers, including nationwide shortages of underrepresented minority teachers, as well as severe shortages of teachers in certain geographic areas. The project is a partnership between the American Physical Society (APS) and the American Association of Physics Teachers, and is supported by the National Science Foundation, and individual and corporate contribu- tions to APS.
