1.5 Interim conclusion and future prospects
Nearly twenty years after the application of CL to TS, CIS is still at a less
advanced stage of development than CBTS. It is clear that one of the reasons for
this is that CIS scholars have always had to compile their own corpora in view of
the fact that they could not rely on ready-made corpora (McEnery et al. 2006: 71).
If we look at more recent studies, we see that CIS scholars have continued to build
their own corpora, but they tend not to keep them for themselves anymore. It is
also important to add that simultaneous interpreting is not the only interpreting
mode that is investigated anymore since studies on classic consecutive and short
consecutive (dialogue) interpreting have been carried out to date as well. CIS
projects do not only study European languages anymore, so we can hope to see
more and more projects based on the investigation of non-European languages. It
is also important to highlight that data collection and data processing have been
made easier thanks to the opportunities offered by technology and also to the
collaboration between researchers.
Now the challenge lies in increasing trainees’ awareness and finding possible
applications to interpreter education and professional practice. Some examples of
corpus used in the interpreting curriculum already offer stimulating ways to
increase trainees’ awareness of collocations, phraseology, language-specific

features and terminological preparation. Small-scale and large-scale interpreting
corpora, machine-readable or not, show a great potential as they do not only serve
the purpose of one project, but allow the development of interpreter training and
professional practice. In the near future, we will be witnessing the creation of
corpora linked to different types of interpreting as a result of greater collaboration
in data collection, transcription, annotation and sharing.
