Strategies, SI technique and process modelling
Using time-aligned authentic corpora is essential to understand and to model the
cognitive processes and strategies in simultaneous interpreting. Until today it is the
machine-interpreting research group at Nagoya (Japan) that has published the
most intensive corpus-fed research on interpreting strategies and processes. They
published a classification of Japanese-English SI strategies (Tohyama et al.,
2006a), which are the control of the utterance speed, the control of delay time, the
control of the length of the pause, and the good use of sight translation pattern.
These four categories were used as index to categorize the CIAIR (Center for
Integrated Acoustic Information Center) simultaneous interpretation corpus into
appropriate order of difficulty. They also detailed measurements of lag (Ohno et al.,
2008) and showed that Japanese-English interpretation has a larger delay than
English-Japanese interpretation and that numerals are interpreted quickly
regardless of the language pairs. Finally, they conducted analyses of human vs.
machine segmentation for SI and stated that human segmentation was more
difficult to implement when there were discourse markers (Ding et al., 2005).

Social and ideological aspects
Some CIS studies focus on intertextuality, norms or interpreter-participant
interaction (Diriker, 2001). In terms of norms, Diriker lays the emphasis on
objectivity and faithfulness. When the interpreter filters out ‘unessential
information’ (mainly paralinguistic elements), he/she makes a choice, the choice to
omit. That means that the interpreter is a much more active participant than
usually accepted. CIS studies also investigate the use of linguistic and discourse
indicators such as lexical density, repetition, metaphor or politeness (Monacelli,
2009). As for politeness, Monacelli’s findings (2009) reveal that interpreters tend to
have a self-regulatory behavior, such as “distancing, de-personalization and the
mitigation of illocutionary force” (2009: 158). They are then in a detached position
to the source text and the target text. Finally, some CIS studies focus on the
expression of ideology or cultural identity (Beaton, 2007). Beaton’s findings
suggest that simultaneous interpreters strengthen EU institutional hegemony
especially due to their extensive use of conceptual metaphor strings.
