Half of complex noun phrases are correctly interpreted (50.84%), see examples 42 and 43, while a non-negligible number of NPs (almost one NP out of five, 18.56%) is wrongly interpreted (examples 44 and 45). (42) across-the-board reduction of their cognitive capacities > réduction totale de leurs capacités cognitives (Item #91 - IN02_STU01) (43) average female form > forme d’une femme normale (Item #86 - IN03_STU03) (44) mere speck of dust revolving around the sun > une simple planète parmi un système entier (Item #9 – IN02_STU01) (45) sickle cell anaemia > envoi d’e-mails séquentiels (Item #3 – IN01_STU07) As highlighted by Bartlomiejczyk (2006) and Kader & Seubert (2015), a useful strategy to interpret complex noun phrases is compression (also called condensing), which corresponds to reduced renditions in Wadensjö taxonomy. This phenomenon (whether conscious or not) is quite frequent in the dataset, with 16.8% of all renditions of NPs. (46) brain ability > capacité (Item #59 – IN01_STU04) (47) soft-boiled egg > oeuf (Item #9 – IN02_STU02) Zero renditions (omissions) are quite infrequent. They are the fourth most frequent type of rendition (9.07%). Omissions are not necessarily wrong. As shown by Gile (1995), an omission can be justified or unjustified. A justified, or conscious, omission can be made when the interpreter does not have enough time to process the information and does not recall what the speaker said. In some rare cases, students decided to explicitate the noun phrase (2.63%). (48) wouldn’t give me a penny for it > vous ne me donneriez absolument rien pour cela, ça ne vaut pas un centime (Item #47 – IN03_STU05) (49) pleasing effect in the brain > effet qui soit positif pour le cerveau (Item #50 – IN03_STU01) Results and discussion page 72 Finally, it is interesting to note that, in some cases, students are heavily influenced by the source language (here English) and use words that are not attested in the target language (so-called innovative renditions). However, this type of rendition is extremely rare in the present dataset (0.40%). (50) epitome of feminine sensuality > épitome de la sensualité (Item #85 – IN03_STU05) (51) (10) cross-modal synesthetic abstraction > abstraction synesthésiste (Item #49 – IN01_STU02) Download 1.62 Mb.
