E. Spenser
Leave Me, O Love

Leave me, O love which reaches but to dust,
And thou my mind aspire to higher things;
Grow rich in that which never taketh rust
Whatever fades but fading pleasure brings.

Draw in thy beams, and humble all thy might
To that sweet yoke where lasting freedoms be
Which breaks the clouds and opens forth the light,
That doth both shine and give us sight to see.

O take fast hold; let that light be thy guide
In this shall course which birth draws out to death,
And think how evil becometh him to slide
Who seeketh heaven, and comes of heavenly breath.
Then farewell world; thy unttermost I see;
Eternal love, maintain thy life in me.

William Shakespeare
Sonnet 130

My mistress‟ eyes are nothing like the sun;
Corel is far more red than her lips‟ red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.

I have seen roses damasked, red and white
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.

I love to hear her speak , yet well I know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound;
I grant I never saw a goddess go;
My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground.

And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
As any she belied with false compare. 1609
