Significance of the Study

The result of this study is expected to provide practical benefits to the Sokoto state government the teachers, parents, primary education policy makers, researchers and the society.

The Sokoto state government stands to gain a lot from this study by having more insight in implementation of primary education program, especially in the teaching and learning of Early Grade Reading in both Hausa and English Language

The study will inform the Sokoto State government and education policy makers about the appropriate language of instruction in primary 5 based on the interest of the pupils, teachers, parents and experts

Improve more literature on the strategies of teaching and learning of reading in Nigerian Primary Schools

The study will provide the current data on the level of pupils’ reading component skills in Sokoto

The primary school teachers in Sokoto state will become more informed on the need for them to make use of various appropriate languages of instruction and instructional strategies to facilitate pupils’ early acquisition of reading skills. Equally, the head teachers of primary schools will through the findings of this study be made to realize the importance of making teachers possess the required competence to inculcate reading skills among pupils by making reading lessons more interesting and motivating.

The findings of this study will inform the primary education policy makers and curriculum designers about the realities in terms of reading competencies among pupils in the primary schools and the preferred language of instruction among the children, parents, teachers, and experts.

Through the findings of this study, parents having kids in primary schools will be exposed to the need for providing support to schools’ efforts through home teaching of reading to equip children with the necessary reading skills. This study will also add value to the knowledge obtained from several studies earlier carried out in Sokoto state, Nigeria and by other researchers and agencies around the world on the development of reading component skills among primary school pupils.
