AbstractThis article tries to analyze the poem “The First Day at School” by Roger McGough,
one of the famous Liverpool poets. In different types of literary genres, poetry has been stressed most,
because poems have their own tune, especially children’s poetry has its own features. To write for
children demands the poet to look around through the children’s eyes. In the article we analyzed new
words used by a child as well, which are created by the poet in order to open a child’s feelings and his
situation.
Key words: poet, poem, child, children, literature, lesson, classroom, teacher, school, adults, love,
picture, tune, word.

Introduction
It is well known that in different types of literary genres, poetry has been stressed most, because poems
have their own tune, which none of the musical instrument can play. By combining rhythm and
structure a great number of great works are created by great poets. Contemporary British poet Roger
McGough is a master in writing such poems.
Mileeva and Rojko in their research define: “Roger McGough is a multi-talented person”

fellow of Liverpool John Moores University, fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and President of
the Poetry Society. McGough was one of the leading members of the Liverpool Poets, a group of
young poets of 1960s Liverpool.
Greek poet Simonides once said, “Poetry is a picture with sound while the pictures are the silent
poems”.
